Firefox Running Slow? Make It Fast Again Without Re-Installation

0 komentar

Problem: You cannot imagine life without Firefox but over time, your favorite browser keeps getting slower and slower.

Not only is it slow, Firefox sometimes hangs for no reason, consumes a large amount of memory and CPU usage can climb to 90% or more when you have multiple tabs open simultaneously.

You have uninstalled most of the extensions and toolbars, deleted all the cookies and internet temporary files, cleared up the file download queue and disabled the background check for software updates - but none of this has helped you speed-up Firefox.

Solution: This is a common problem especially if you have been running Firefox for some time - I don't know why Firefox slows down but here's a small trick to rejuvenate the aged copy of Firefox without doing a fresh install.

Step 1: Start Firefox and export your bookmarks as a file on your hard-drive (we'll need them later).

Step 2: Type firefox.exe - P in the Run box of Windows. (see screenshot)

Step 3: Click the Create Profile button without making any modifications to your existing profile (which is normally called "default")

Now when you Start Firefox in the new profile, you are very likely to be impressed with the speed. You can import the bookmarks that you saved in Step 1. If you have made any changes to the Firefox Dictionary, copy the persdict.dat word list file from the old profile folder to the new one.

Yes, there won't be any old Firefox add-ons in the new profile but the browser will be extremely quick and won't hog the CPU - just the way you want Firefox to run on your computer.

And if you ever need to revert to the old profile, just type Firefox -P again and click the old profile. Nothing is lost.

Make IE7 open pop-ups in a new tab

0 komentar

Tabs are one of the best new features in Internet Explorer 7. I like them because they keep my task bar clean of extra Internet Explorer instances. The only problem I have is with pop-ups that are on my allow list such as when I write a new message in Outlook Web Access.

Follow these steps to configure Internet Explorer 7 to always open up pop-ups in a new tab instead of a new browser window:

1. While IE7 is running, click on Tools and select Internet Options.
2. On the General tab under the Tabs section hit Settings.
3. Under the When a pop-up is encountered section, select Always open pop-ups in a new tab. I also like using the Let Internet Explorer decide how pop-ups should open option because of some web sites I visit.
4. Hit OK and you are finished.

Internet Explorer 7 Is an Open Door for Attacks

0 komentar

Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is nothing short of an open door for attacks. Microsoft informed that it is currently investigating a remote code execution vulnerability in various versions of XP and Windows Server 2003 running Internet Explorer 7. The Redmond company added that Windows Vista users are safe, although the operating system comes with IE7 built in by default. Windows XP SP2, XP Professional x64 Edition, Professional x64 Edition SP2; Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition and SP2 and Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based Systems and Windows Server 2003 with SP2 for Itanium-based Systems are all vulnerable to the security flaw, provided they are running IE7. The vulnerability is related to the way the Windows operating system handles Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs).

“When a user clicks a link to a URI, the application showing that link to users decides how it is supposed to be handled. For traditionally “safe” protocols like mailto: or http: applications often just verify the prefix and then choose to call into the Windows shell32 function ShellExecute() to handle it. This has been the case for a number of years. Windows then launches Internet Explorer passing the URI or launches the preferred email client passing the email address etc. With IE6 installed, ShellExecute() passes the URI to IE which accepts it and inside IE determines it to be invalid. Navigation then fails harmlessly. With Internet Explorer 7 installed, the flow is a bit different”, explained Jonathan Ness with the SWI team at Microsoft Security Response Center.

With IE7, Microsoft has implemented additional validation in the process of rejecting a malformed URI. Essentially, malformed URIs will no longer be rejected up front, and instead would be moved to ShellExecute() in order to be fixed. When ShellExecute() is handling URIs in order to make them usable, the process is not safely managed. In Vista, for example, ShellExecute() also rejects the URI, but the copies of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 do not deliver a similar behavior. Microsoft emphasized that the vulnerability can be successfully exploited only in the limited contexts described above, and that other versions of the Windows operating system with IE7 installed are not affected.

“Our plan is to revise our URI handling code within ShellExecute() to be more strict. While our update will help protect all applications from malformed URI’s, application vendors who handle URI’s can also do stricter validation themselves to prevent malicious URI’s from being passed to ShellExecute(). We have seen several vendors introduce additional validation as a way to protect their customers from this issue”, Ness added.

Clean out unneeded Services quickly

Windows Vista has around 130 services. True, not all of them are running, but most are set to default to run when necessary. Over half of them start up on a default machine. Your first step towards tweaking vista should be to disable services that you frankly have no need for. They are just running aimlessly.

There are two options here. You can manually go through all 129 services with the aid of our In-depth guide to help you determine if you might need a service (dependencies and what depends on a given service are listed), or you can run one of our custom Registry files which will allow you to try out several tweaked settings. Don’t worry, if you mess up your services, or you don’t like the results of the tweaked settings, you can always go back to the default settings with one of the handy default reg files on the same page.

Thats pretty much it. Realize that:

* Default: The service will not run on default, but if requested to by any other process, it will start up.
* Automatic: Start up this service right on computer load.
* Automatic (Delayed Start):Start up this service on computer boot, but starting it up can wait until after user is logged in. The startup of the process can be delayed/set to a lower priority.
* Disabled: The service will not run, even if requested to.

Speed up Aero by Disabling Minimize/Maximize

Some performance increases have nothing to do with strain on hardware, or amount of processing. Sometimes, things are designed to take longer than they should, though only maybe 1/2 a second, but the end result to the user is a faster machine. This is one of those tweaks. Minimizing and maximizing does an animation. Watch closely. Pretty quick eh? Still, it does slow you down, and, really, what does it add to your experience? I am all about vanity and aesthetics, but this feature has got to go.

Relish in the fact you will be increasing your productivity by 0.2 seconds per minimize/maximize.

* Open your start menu, go to run, and type in ’systempropertiesperformance’
* From the Visual Effects tab, uncheck ‘Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing’
* While you are here, might as well check out the other goodies you can disable.

How to Manage Your Gmail Storage Size

0 komentar

Recently, the Mountain View company Google received a new service which allows users to buy additional storage size for their account but is currently compatible only with Gmail and Picasa Web Albums. Because the purchased storage space addresses the Google account, you can use it for any service you need. But there is a problem. Some of the users are interested in using the Gmail storage size, the one offered for free by Google, for Picasa Web Albums or vice-versa. Well, that’s simply not possible. Google permits the users to share the storage size only if they bought additional space so if you want to split the Gmail storage in order to use it for Picasa photos, you can’t.

“Paid storage is designed to give you more space across all Google services that support extra storage (currently Picasa Web Albums and Gmail). If you run out of free storage in either service, you’ll automatically use the space you’ve purchased to store more pictures and messages up to your new storage limit,” Google explains in the Gmail FAQ.

“The free storage for each service is for that service only. Picasa Web Album’s 1 GB of free storage is for pictures only, and Gmail’s 2.9 GB (and counting) are just for Gmail messages. You can’t set aside shared storage space for one service - it will be used by any service that’s over its free storage quota on a first-come, first-served basis.”

At this time, you can easily buy new Google account storage size by paying $20 per year for 10 GB, $75 per year for 40 GB, $250 per year for 150 GB and $500 per year for no less than 400 GB. However, the Mountain View company recently announced that the storage size counter has been modified so the Gmail users will surely receive more space very soon.

Windows Vista Users in Trouble With the New Firefox

Mozilla rolled out Firefox 2.0.0.8 a few days ago, being a version which was supposed to patch approximately 200 glitches. Although it fixed most of them, it appears that it also caused some others making the application a little buggy. However, Mike Beltzner of Mozilla wrote on the company’s blog that Firefox 2.0.0.9 is currently in labs and might be released next week for all the users. The matter can be called “an update to fix the update” because the new patches will be released to repair the fixes which were launched a few days ago.

“The 2.0.0.8 release fixed some 200 issues, but accidentally regressed a few things. Most users won’t see any difference or experience any problems, and those 200 fixes make the 2.0.0.8 update very valuable, but you should never have to choose functionality over security. So we’re working fast to understand and fix these problems, and will shortly be issuing a 2.0.0.9 update to address them,” the Mozilla official wrote on the company’s blogs.

According to the blog post, one of the main problems of the 2.0.0.8 release of Firefox is the Java compatibility with Windows Vista, the latest operating system powered by the Redmond-headquartered company. It seems like every time a user tries to load a Java applet in the new Firefox, he gets an error saying “Java not found” or “Java not working”. It can be easily fixed by “right-clicking the Firefox icon and “Run as administrator”, then browsing to a page with a Java applet — doing this once will fix the problem and permanently restore Java functionality.” However, Mozilla wants to fix this by default so all the users would be able to access Java applets.

Speed Vista: Tweak your services

0 komentar

Well, this one is arguable. Many sites preach service tweaking as the end all of tweaks, and Vista does have a lot of services (like 130). However, a good portion of them are set to manual or disabled by default. Manual will only start the service when the operating system thinks it needs to use that program. However, Vista does have a lot of services set to Automatic by default that are not needed for many people. Granted, they are usually sleeping, not using any CPU, and if they use memory, they usually get paged out to disk pretty fast. But, regardless, it is fairly quick to do, and will gain you some improvement.

First off, how to tell what you should really be worried about. One new feature in Vista is the ‘Go to Service’ feature in Task Manager (or at least I never noticed it before). Open Task Manager, Processes tab, right click on a particularly heavy process, and select ‘Go to Service (s)’. This will jump you over to the services tab, and select all the services that are running under that process (multiple ones are usually running under svchost.exe, many of the others only map to one service).

It also works in reverse (select service, right click and go to process) I have something like 75 services running at this very moment. Many of them I have exactly zero use for. I do not have a printer, but print spooler is running and using a whole whopping 1MB of my ram at the moment. There are heavier examples, but even if you can remove 20 of these, is it worth your time? Well, yes and no. Like I said, many of them are already paged out, so they really aren’t affecting your system’s memory. There is added overhead because the scheduler still needs to manage them, but I cannot for the life of me remember how it is done in Windows.

Overall maybe minimal, but if you are going for every ounce of tweak-ness, give it a shot. I’d recommend Speedyvista look for their cheatsheet or registry files pages so you can keep a copy of the default services around for when/if you mess it up and need to get back to default.

Speed Vista: Turn off UAC, or at least make it less annoying

0 komentar

Here’s a lot of talk about the new user account control policy in Vista, and all I can say is: as it is, it annoys the hell out of me and slows down my normal computer usage. Just why, oh why, does it have to flash my video card to a black screen, take 5 seconds and really just make itself a royal pain in the arse?

To turn it off, the easiest way is to go into the Control Panel and type in ‘UAC‘ into the search bar. It’ll bring up a search result of ‘Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off’. Just follow the prompts from there.

To keep some of the security of the UAC, let’s just turn off the crazy annoying blacking out screen bit. To do this:

* open group policy (start | run | gpedit.msc)
* then navigate to Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options
* Find the policy named ‘User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation’. Set this to disabled.

Much better, eh? You might say ‘but what’s that got to do with speed?’ Well, as I mentioned, it prompts me a couple times an hour at least and then takes several seconds to figure itself out.

More Windows 7 Revelations

News of the next version of Windows, due out in 2010 and previously known as BlackCombe, then Vienna and now Windows 7 has been fairly thin on the ground since we last mentioned it back in July but a few more tantalising tid-bits have come our way recently.

As expected it marks a significant change in direction for Microsoft with the emphasis on small, and compact and it has already been dubbed ‘MinWin’. According to one report the Windows 7 core or ‘kernel’, does away with all the fangly bits we associate with Vista and XP, resulting in slimmed down versions of that use only 25Mb of disc space (Vista takes up 4Gb of space). The idea is that unlike an all-singing, all-dancing operating system MinWin will provide a bare-bones base upon which developers and users will add the extra building blocks or layers they require, depending on the hardware and applications it is going to be used for.

Antivirus Protection for iPhones

0 komentar

Security company BitDefender rolled out a new virus definition for its antivirus technology in order to discover the malicious files used by attackers to exploit the reported vulnerabilities in Apple’s iPhones. In case you missed the news, it was said that an attacker can use a dangerous TIFF file in order to exploit the flaws from iPhone’s Safari browser. What’s most interesting is that the security holes where then used by the iPhone owners to unlock their devices and remove the restrictions applied by the Cupertino company. This way, they would be able to install any software they want without any limitation.

BitDefender reported that the flaw affects only the version 1.1.1 of the Apple iPhone firmware. Because the consumers would be able to install anything they like, they all need an antivirus technology able to defend their device against viruses and other types of malicious files which might harm their handheld. That’s why BitDefender decided to implement iPhone support into their antivirus technology which would offer the protection mentioned above.

“Owners of unlocked iPhones are especially at risk because installing a later version of the firmware is not an option for them, so the flaw will be present in their browser even after Apple releases a patch,” declared Razvan Stoica, BitDefender Communications Specialist. “We strongly advise installing and using BitDefender with the latest signature updates, especially for corporate or ISP gateways.”

Today’s viruses and malicious files target all kinds of devices and operating systems so there is no secret that you have to install a security software solution in order to remain protected and safe while using it. The iPhone is just an example, but the virus infections target all file formats and devices available at this time, including PC, mobile phone and several others.

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn for Speed

If you use Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn) as your Linux distribution, which everyone knows it’s a pretty fast Linux operating system, you can also do some tricks in order to get a boost. I will teach you today some quick hacks on how to improve the overall performance of your system.

WARNING: Please follow the instructions below very carefully, in the order in which they are listed below and reboot your machine after each one. If not, your operating system will NOT work anymore.

1. Boot tweaking

It is a very good idea to do this tweak when you first install Ubuntu, but you can also do it anytime after the installation. This will reorganize some files that are read when the computer boots and it makes the boot process a little faster. All you have to do is hit the ESC button to see the GRUB menu when the computer starts, then select the second line (the one that looks like this: /vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=6162302f-3f32-4b73-bb56-c42f4f9fbce2 ro quiet splash) and hit the “e” key to edit that line. Add the word profile at the end of this line (don’t forget to put a space before you type profile). Hit enter when you’re done and then push the “b” key on your keyboard in order to boot the system.

It will take a little longer to boot, but only this one time, because after this process it will boot faster.

2. Filesystem tweaks

The following tweaks are for EXT3 and ReiserFS filesystems

Open a console and type:

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

Add the following options marked in bold to the root (/) mount line. In other words, it should change from this:

# /dev/sdb2
UUID=f4d4d73d-4141-4701-a7e2-ec41664483a7 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

into this:

# /dev/sdb2
UUID=f4d4d73d-4141-4701-a7e2-ec41664483a7 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro,noatime,data=writeback 0 1

Now type the following command in the console:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

And add this option:

rootflags=data=writeback

to the end of the following lines:

# defoptions=quiet splash rootflags=data=writeback

# altoptions=(recovery mode) single rootflags=data=writeback

Now save and close, and type the following command in the console:

sudo update-grub

Type now the following command in order to manually change your filesystem “on-the-fly” into writeback.

NOTE: Please note that /dev/sdb2 is my root (/) partition. If you have the root (/) partition in another place, change it accordingly. Please look in /etc/fstab for this!

WARNING: The next trick is only for EXT3 filesystems! For ReiserFS this will NOT work, so don’t run the following command, just reboot your system for the changes to apply.

sudo tune2fs -o journal_data_writeback /dev/sdb2

That’s all, now reboot your system and when you get back, you should feel an increased speed in video, image or audio usage.

3. Tuning Swappiness

If you have been running Linux systems for some time and you have used applications like ‘top’ to see what’s going on in your machine, then you’ve probably wondered: Where has all my memory gone? You should know that the largest place is being used in the disk cache, as the cached memory is free and it can be replaced anytime if a newly started application needs that memory. Linux systems are made like this to use so much memory for disk cache because the RAM is wasted if is not used and if something needs the same data again, then there is a very good chance to be in the cache memory.

In a console type the following code:

sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf

Now add the following line at the end of this file:

vm.swappiness=0

The number at the end of this line can be between 0 and 100. At 100 the Linux kernel will prefer to find inactive pages and swap them out, while value 0 gives something close to the old behavior where applications that wanted memory could shrink the cache to a tiny fraction of RAM.

4. Concurrent booting

If you have a dual-core processor or one that supports hyperthreading then concurrent booting allows Ubuntu to take advantage of them. Just open a console and type the following code:

sudo gedit /etc/init.d/rc

and find the line CONCURRENCY=none and change it to:

CONCURRENCY=shell

Save and reboot your computer.

5. IPv6 tweaking

In Linux, most of the installed software uses the IPv4 Internet protocol in order to connect to the internet and because the IPv6 protocol is enabled by default in Ubuntu, you must create a file to block this protocol. Type the following code in a console:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/bad_list

and add the next line in that file:

alias net-pf-10 off

Remember to hit enter after you’ve added the above line, save and exit.

in case you didnt know Firefox has a small memory leakage problems that can cause your pc to freeze up. basically what happens is when you minimize Firefox it stops consuming memory, however when you maximize it again the memory usage will increase, sometimes even doubling. fortunately, there is a small fix that you can implement.
heres what you do:

1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter config.trim_on_minimize. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

tada, Firefox will stop eating your memory

Simple Firefox Speed Tweak

0 komentar

Over the years I have tried a number of tweaks to speed up the Firefox browser, some of them work quite well, but this has to be the best one yet, and it is really easy. All you have to do is open Firefox’s hidden configuration menu, to do that go to the address bar and type about:config and the settings list opens. Scroll down until you come to Network prefetch-next, and if the entry in the Value column reads ‘True’ right-click on it and select Toggle (or double click) and it will change to false. It’s that easy! You should now see a noticeable increase in speed when you open pages.

The program lets you do smooth sailing flybyes of the entire Earth. You can easily fly to any spot on the globe, by entering any associated data, like street addresses, place names or lat/long coordinates. There are overlays that put additional information on the map, like roads, international boundaries, terrain, 3D buildings, crime statistics, schools, stadiums, any number of interesting stuff. You can do Local searches in the program, with icons on the map and a display on the side showing your results. You can leave notes, called ???placemarks??? all over the map, so you can remember where all sorts of places are. Searches and placemarks can be saved as bookmarks in ???My Places???. Everything can be output in an XML format called KML, that will allow the vast popularity of Google Maps to continue in Earth. You can also email a JPEG of the map, or send a KMZ file if you know the recipient has Earth installed.Google Earth is free for personal use. No registration is required.
