GNOME versi 2.2 Diluncurkan

Komunitas GNOME mengumumkan peluncuran versi terbaru dari GNOME setelah enam bulan dalam pengembangan. GNOME, salah satu solusi desktop environment yang paling banyak digunakan pada Linux dan platform open source lainnya. GNOME dengan versi 2.20 mencakup sejumlah feature dan pengembangan baru yang akan semakin memudahkan pengguna, administrator, dan juga para pengembang.

Feature image viewer dari GNOME mengalami perubahan yang signifikan dengan ditambahkannya interface koleksi gambar dan menu “Open With”. File Manager Nautilus sekarang telah menyediakan tampilan kapasitas hard disk dalam bentuk pie chart pada dialog File Properties. Integrasi pencarian desktop yang pertama kali muncul pada GNOME versi 2.14 sekarang telah ditambahkan pada dialog File Properties GNOME.





GNOME 2.2 juga telah mengalami peningkatan kinerja dalam hal manajemen sumber daya pada komputer notebook. GNOME Power Manager akan memonitor konsumsi daya Anda setiap waktu guna mengkalkulasi secara akurat berapa daya tersisa pada notebook Anda. Game will not install for XP

If you are having trouble installing a games software, the steps listed below may help you determine the cause and help you finish the installation.

1. Be sure that the Windows version that you are trying to install on is supported by the game.
2. Check to make sure that you have enough Hard Disk space available to load the software.
3. Check to make sure that your PC meets the minimum system requirements to run the game.
4. Turn off DMA:

Some game manufactures use a copy protection verification test. But with high-speed drives, the disc may spin so quickly that the test fails. If the test does not pass, the software will not install. Do get around this issue, try turning off DMA (Direct Memory Access) in your Device Manager. Here’s how:

1. Go to Start>> Control Panel>> System>> Hardware tab>> Device Manager tab.
2. Go to the “View” menu and make sure that “View devices by type” is selected.
3. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers entry (double click).
4. Double click Secondary IDE Channel entry.
5. Select the Advanced Settings tab.
6. Under the Device 0 category and next to the Transfer Mode entry, you will find a drop down menu that lists two entries:

* DMA if available
* PIO Only

7. If “DMA if available” is showing, select PIO Only. Click OK.
8. Exit Device Manager and Control Panel.
9. Restart your system

Note: Once the verification process completes and your game software is successfully installed, you can turn DMA back on using the above method.

XP Game Compatibility

You want to know if all your favorite games are still going to run under Windows XP. Remember what happened when we tried to run games on our Windows 2000 machines? Sometimes we were a little disappointed. Windows 2000 was made more for corporate applications than “Quake,” but true techno-geeks know they don’t have to sacrifice death matches for a robust business environment — at least not anymore.

Windows XP has shown an impressive track record of game compatibility. We ran a number of standard games, such as “Tiger Woods Golf,” “NHL 2001,” “Max Payne,” and “Unreal” on our Windows XP Professional machine. Some of these games were specifically slated for Windows 95 and 98, and were shown not to work in Windows 2000. The installation in XP was as smooth as silk. The games ran quickly and beautifully — not a problem in sight (except for my bad chip shot — Tiger was hanging his head in shame).

Some less-sophisticated programs may not run as smoothly, and we found that some older applications, such as the Atari 2600 Classic Game Collection, did not appreciate the Windows XP environment. In this case you can use the Application Compatibility Wizard, found in the accessories menu. XP includes integrated compatibility layers to mimic older versions of Windows, so if your program does not work in Windows XP, the compatibility wizard will walk you through the process of getting even your favorite DOS games up and running. In this case, we ran the Atari Classic Game Collection in the Windows 95 environment, at 256 colors and 640×480 screen resolution. Then we set XP to always run our Atari application in this environment, and everything was smooth sailing after that.

One final tip about compatibility: Don’t run the compatibility wizard if your program appears to be running well in the normal environment, as the wizard will give you an error message. In general, XP has great program compatibility, so you can upgrade your operating system without giving up all your old favorites.
