XP to Windows 7

Users currently running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) or earlier, and Windows Vista RTM, SP1 or the upcoming SP2, will be able to upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft informed as it introduced the SKU lineup for the next version of the Windows client. There will be essentially three upgrade models for Windows users according to the Redmond company, depending on the source operating system, namely XP to Windows 7, Vista to Windows 7 and of course Windows 7 to Windows 7.

As far as Windows XP users are concerned, Microsoft indicated that upgrade licenses of Windows 7 will be available to them, superseding the existing XP licenses, and that the upgrade media can be used in order to move to Windows 7. However, the transition implies a clean installation of Windows 7 rather than an actual in-place upgrade. Still, the deal has to please XP users, as they will get the full Windows 7 bits at a discounted upgrade price. Users are advised to back up all their data from the partition where XP is installed before deploying Windows 7, just to be on the safe side.

For Vista, users will indeed be able to enjoy in-place upgrades to Windows 7. In this context, Windows 7 deployments on top of Windows Vista will leave everything in place, from installed applications to data. The upgrade process however is extremely slow compared to a clean installation of Windows 7. The software giant revealed that Vista editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) can be upgraded to the corresponding or higher editions of Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate).

At the same time, just as was the case with Vista, users will be able to jump from one edition of Windows 7 to another, provided that the upgrade is done to a superseding SKU, thanks to the Anytime Upgrade feature. Just a reminder, the full line-up of Windows 7 editions is: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate.

“For Windows 7, we are using a single image for all SKUs. This means the bits for all the editions are already on your computer if you are running Windows 7. With Windows Anytime Upgrade, users can unlock and upgrade to a different SKU much easier than before,” revealed Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team. “In Windows 7, each SKU is a superset of the previous SKU. No features are lost on upgrade.”

Windows XP SP3 RTM Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack

The Multilingual User Interface Pack for Windows XP is designed to enable the end user to swap the languages for the graphical user interface. Microsoft has available a version of the MUI Pack which is tailored to XP Service Pack 2. Now, with the advent of XP SP3, the Redmond company has not made available a new variant of the MUI Pack, but instead introduced an update set up to make the Multilingual User Interface package for XP SP2 play well with Service Pack 3. The update is, in fact, meant to fix an incongruity between the MUI Pack and the gold bits of XP SP3.

“On a computer that is running the English version of Windows XP SP3 with the Windows XP SP2 Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack, you can select a non-English language for the user interface (UI). However, text may appear in English in the UI instead of in the selected language. The English text may appear in lists, menus, dialog boxes, product Help, and other locations,” Microsoft informed.

Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.1, Network Access Protection (NAP) and Scripting binaries are the components Microsoft pointed to as failing to integrate seamlessly into XP SP3. The update resolves all issues, according to the company. “Install this package to get the Microsoft Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) Update for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3),” Microsoft revealed.

“As noted on TechNet off the main Windows XP TechCenter, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) is now available for download and install via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system, in addition to a small number of new updates. Windows XP SP3 will not significantly change the Windows XP experience. We recommend customers use Windows Update to install the service pack, as it will provide the best experience,” revealed M3 Sweatt, the Chief of Staff of the Windows Core Operating System Division (COSD) at Microsoft.

Moving Files from Windows to Mac

When you make the switch from a Windows box to a Mac, you are going to need to copy all of your data files over to the Mac. The quickest way to do that is over a network. Yes, you can use “old school” media such as CDs, DVDs or USB thumb drives, but this is very tedious and will take forever. Networking the Windows and Mac machines is actually not very hard. It is not quite as straightforward as networking two Windows machines together, but if I can manage to do it on my second day using OS X, it can’t be too hard.

Networking Windows and Mac OS X

Windows and Mac come from different ends of the operating system spectrum, but luckily both are easy enough to use that networking them together isn’t brain surgery. Here is how to set it up so as to be able to move files from your Windows machine to the Mac. I am going to assume you know at least some basic networking here.

1. Under Windows, you need to find our your workgroup name if you don’t already know it. So, go to Control Panel -> System -> Computer Name. Your workgroup will be listed. Make note of it as you will need to set the Mac up to use it.

2. Find the folders your data is in that you want to move and enable file sharing on those folders if not already done.

3. Now, on the Mac, go to System Preferences -> Sharing. Enable file sharing on the Mac by checking that option. Next, click Options and be sure “Share Files and folders using SMB” is checked. Select your Mac username from the list by checking that. Hit Done.

4. Next, go to Network under System Preferences. Hit the Advanced button. Go to the “WINS” tab and enter or select your workgroup name. Hit OK.

5. In Finder, select “Connect to Server…”. Enter “smb://[IP ADDRESS]/[SHARE NAME]” and hit Connect. [IP ADDRESS] is the IP address of your Windows machine. [SHARE NAME] is the name you assigned to the shared folder on your Windows machine. If you do not know the IP address of your Windows machine on your network, go to the command prompt and type in “ipconfig”.

6. If all works correctly, the Mac should be able to connect to and display the files in your shared folder inside of Finder. From there, you can copy the files over to your Mac and place them wherever you want.

More Windows 7 Revelations

News of the next version of Windows, due out in 2010 and previously known as BlackCombe, then Vienna and now Windows 7 has been fairly thin on the ground since we last mentioned it back in July but a few more tantalising tid-bits have come our way recently.

As expected it marks a significant change in direction for Microsoft with the emphasis on small, and compact and it has already been dubbed ‘MinWin’. According to one report the Windows 7 core or ‘kernel’, does away with all the fangly bits we associate with Vista and XP, resulting in slimmed down versions of that use only 25Mb of disc space (Vista takes up 4Gb of space). The idea is that unlike an all-singing, all-dancing operating system MinWin will provide a bare-bones base upon which developers and users will add the extra building blocks or layers they require, depending on the hardware and applications it is going to be used for.

GNOME versi 2.2 Diluncurkan

Komunitas GNOME mengumumkan peluncuran versi terbaru dari GNOME setelah enam bulan dalam pengembangan.
